In The Paint Gettin T'D Up

Participating in my first fantasy basketball league this shortened season (Lockout...Ya kidding Me?). Just finished up my Draft and I'm feeling my squad yo.

I present to you the In The Paint Gettin T'D Up:

Team Photo

Round 1: Dwight Howard
Round 2: Al Jefferson
Round 3: Andre Iguodala
Round 4: Jrue Holiday
Round 5: Serge Ibaka
Round 6: Brandon Jennings
Round 7: Marc Gasol
Round 8: Lamar Odom
Round 9: Kris Kardashian Humphries
Round 10: Anderson Varejao
Round 11: Aaron Afflalo
Round 12: George Hill
Round 13: Thaddeus Young

I'm a lil big man heavy (#pause) but they're all double double machines.

I do have a few hopes for the season and my success:
Dwight's terrible free throw shooting doesn't weigh my team down.
Kim Kris Humphries isn't wallowing over his divorce and rebounds well.
Lamar plays almost as good without Kobe riding him (#Doubleentendre).
Jrue Holiday lives up to the hype.
A breakout season from one (or more) of my sleepers Afflalo, Hill and Young.

It's gonna be an interesting 1st season for ya boy. I'm feeling good though. We'll see how it goes.

And I'm in the Shiva Bowl (Championship) in my Fantasy Football league.

No More Ronery Nights

Kim Jung-il's death marks the end of a dictatorship.

Also marks the end of his bout with ronerness.

Back in action...

Been off my blog game of late. What can I say I've been kinda busy, you know being in school and all lol.

On Friday I handed in my last final for the semester. Yesterday I did my last day at my internship for the year. My semester is officially over!

ASL for Finished
It's been an OD rough semester for me. School was cool but having my field placement 3 days a week added a lot of hours onto my 17 credit course load. They throw us right into the fire and we mostly crash and burn lol. I've some how survived though and am looking forward to this break and getting back on my blog game. There were several things that I started but never was able to finish. Over the break I will back track and finish those out and put them up.

I'm back in action.

Yea that's Billy Blanks...the Tae Bo guy and Roddy Piper...the kilt wearing former WWF great.

Delaney: "On Black Friday?
Mr. Surya: "Oh yea"
Delaney: "Oh aight, You want me to work on Moolie Monday too? What about Nigga Tuesday?
Mr. Surya: "Nigga Tuesday? Is this a new holiday?"

LMAO

Morehouse vs Kentucky

The college basketball season officially starts tonight with some mouth watering
(-_-) matchups.

The exception is of course is the North Carolina vs Michigan State game which is being played on an active US Navy Carrier: USS Calvin. The game, a rematch of the 2009 national championship, is set to be a good one. If not at least we can say that it's on a boat. Pretty fucking cool.

Anyway, I din't start this to write about UNC but about another powerhouse Kentucky. Even though the season starts today most schools have played a few exhibitions to prepare, Kentucky included.

On Monday night, my Alma mater: Morehouse College traveled to Lexington, Kentucky to take on the famed Wildcats.

Why, you ask?

Who knows?

Maybe he does

Seriously though I think hope that it involved some money being given to my school. This is a common practice in college football. The big schools often pay smaller schools to travel to their schools for a game, cupcake matchups. Hopefully, Morehouse got 6 figures for it because, well you know what happened...

And we have no NBA thus far....

Great.

11/11/11 x Friday x Veteran's Day

Today is the 11th day of the 11th month of the (20)11th year.

Pretty epic.

What makes it so much better it's that it's Friday:

Gotta get down on Friday.

Oh, and it's Veteran's Day.

Salute.

Enjoy ya day.

Throwback Thursday: This Can't Be Life

Going to see the Watch The Throne concert on Saturday in NJ. So hype.

This week's Throwback Thursday is an ode to WTT. This was the first collaboration between Jay-Z and Kanye West. 'Ye didn't rap but he made the beat and started a friendship that would later lead to WTT and the best concert I'm ever going to experience (already proclaiming this).

Halloween Weekend

Snowed like crazy on Saturday but I still put my uniform on and hit the streets. Linked up with #theteam and refereed the hell out of this party.

Homecoming Wrap Up

Oh #Homecoming.

Friday:

The Odyssey to get to Atlanta. Original flight was at 10:30am, missed it because of sick traffic. Stood by for 3 different flights with no luck. Got on a van with 9 strangers and went to White Plains for a seat on a 630pm flight. Got to Atlanta at 8:15pm but didn't get of the plane until close to 9pm.

Straight to the hotel to change. Pregame. Black Love.

Got drunk as hell, saw a gazillion people, served as the mediator for a couple consisting of 2 of my best friends, found my lady, went back to the crib.

Saturday:

Linked up with my LBs: 16 B.I.B.I. for the 5 year anniversary lunch. Recapped stories, told jokes, ate wings, drank brew, had my first shot of patreezy, had a damn good time, got our anniversary t-shirt.

Left the restaurant, stopped by the liquor store, picked up some patreezy, lemonade and Sprite, got to campus, mixed it up, hit the tailgate.

#Occupiedtailgate. Drank all day. Chilled with the bros. Hungout with my crew from DuBois. Flirted with every girl in sight.

Some photos:

Couples snapbacks
Telling the Nupe @Parkour_Louis he in the blue section

#Shindigged it up @BlackDeanMartin crib like old times. Passed out round 4am I think.

Sunday:

Spent the day mostly in recovery. Brunch at Waffle House with the homie Patrice. Late that night hit @DueorDie comedy show. The man has skills, bright future too. Be on the look out.

Monday:

Departure.

All in all a great trip.

I'm Coming Home

Soon it's gonna be 5 years since I crossed:

I was young and full of zeal lol.
Anyway, my LBs wanna spend this Homecoming celebrating our 5 year anniversary. Wasn't planning on going but how could I not?

With that being said, Morehouse, tell the world that I'm Coming Home:

Throwback Thursday: Hard Knock Life

I recently read an article in New York Magazine about a possible Basquiat on a Brooklyn bodega door. I'm cultured lol. Yea that's the same Basquiat that Hov and 'Ye consistently reference on Watch The Throne.

Basquiat in a Brooklyn bodega ---> Jay-Z rapping about Basquiat ---> Jay-Z rapping in a Brooklyn bodega:

Crazy how these thing correlate in my mind...

Interludes that should be full songs

I love interludes, mostly the funny ones like the ones Cam'ron does. I also like interludes that are songs. There are some that I wish were full songs though.

Miguel is the reason why I started thinking about this because of

The Girl With The Tattoo

This joint is so smooth...it def could have gone on for a few more minutes.

Usher has a few as well:

Prayer For You

I love this tribute/dedication to his son, its really touching...there was another verse or something.

Without You

Tough to say that this should have been a full song because it's followed by a great song: "Can You Help Me." It's a strong interlude that could have gone on as its own song though.

Alicia Keys too:

Prelude to Kiss

I absolutely love this interlude, it may be my favorite interlude ever. I wish it didn't end.

Never Felt This Way

Real nice instrumental lead up...smooth vocals...ended abruptly. We deserved a second verse.

Feeling You, Feeling Me

See what I wrote above? Same thing here.

Keyshia Cole checks in too

Same Thing

Ever since Keyshia jumped on the scene she made it known she was taking the Queen of Heartbreak throne from MJB. This track would have let us know why, if she would have stretched it out.

Danity Kane may be the biggest culprit though. There interludes are so damn good, better than some of their songs. They have a 3 that make me fee this way:

Come Over

This joint is so dope. It's right up there with "Prelude to Kiss" as my favorite interlude.

Ain't True

One of the best songs about cheating ever.

Secret Place

I can understand why this is a short song...can't talk about the Secret Place for too long lol.

These are just a few that come to mind but I'm sure there are many more interludes that should have been full songs...let me know if you think of  a few.

Jay's (Future) Kids

Beyonce is preggo. Or is she?

I know I'm a little late with this but what can I say I've been busy lol.

When I found out that she and Hov were finally having a baby I was kinda sad. Not because I thought that the new born will come out like this:

But because once this youngster enters the world it will mark the end of Jay rapping about his future kids.

I'm a well documented Hov stan and I've gotta say that some of my favorite lines are when he raps about his future kids. One of my favorite songs is "Beach Chair" a will/inspirational note to his future daughter.

Jay def knew something was up as they were making Watch The Throne:

"Sorry Junior, I already ruined ya, you ain't even alive paparazzi pursuing ya...."
- New Day.

His whole verse is dedicated to his future son and it maybe my favorite verse on the album.

And then there's the line in Made it in America:

"Tryin lead a nation to leave to my lil mans...or my daughter."

Which def made me say whoo.

I can't really explain it but rhymes/songs about future kids are so dope to me. Ex: "Letter to my Unborn Child."

Now, well soon, that's all over for Hov. Maybe he'll have a few dope lines/songs post birth of the youngster like Juelz did with "Daddy" and Fab did with "Stay."
We'll see what up.

Throwback Thursday: The Mask

I was listening to The Goodbye Brooklyn EP earlier this week when I heard a great line referencing "The Mask." Great comedy from my youth.

Throwback Thursday: Mariano Rivera, The Beginning

Mariano Rivera is without the shadow of a doubt the greatest closer in the game. Now he has the number to back him up since he clinched his 602 save last week, the most of all-time *Kanye Voice*

Well there was a time when Mariano wasn't a closer, he was merely just the set up man for John Wetteland. That was back in 1996 when Wetteland was a beast. As beasty as he was it was Mo's emergence during the playoffs that year that we all (at least baseball fans) remember. And it's where the Legend of Mo began...well that and his first career save:

Throwback Thursday: "Doin It" - LL Cool J

While I was in DC for the Nation's Classic I patried it up. At this particular house party that I went to I noticed that mostly everyone in there was #borninthe90s (had i know I wouldn't have went trust).

Anyway at some point two of the girls began playing "Doin it" on the iPod hookup that was providing the entertainment. Those jawns were probably 5 or 6 when that came out, way to wild for their young ears. I wasn't much older, only 9, but I remember when I first saw the video. It was like (Softcore) porn. I had to be mad secretive when I watched it.

Cole World, No Blanket

Over the weekend my boys @Larry_Draper and @Parkour_Lewis and I started to referring to unfortunate situations by saying "Cole World, No Blanket" a line J. Cole said in "World is Empty." Real funny stuff.

On Monday night me and G went to a listening party for Cole World: The Sideline Story. Cole was there giving background on some of the tracks, telling us some dope stories.

Fire
We were right in front of the DJbooth where Cole was. At one point when he was talking about how some of his tracks are deeper than people are accustomed to, I yelled to him "We got degrees too Cole" to which he responded "Then you got depth." #Respect

Throughout the evening I kept yelling Cole World, No Blanket after each track played. The album is tough and when it drops on the 27th it's really gonna be a Cole World for the rest of the rappers in the game, with No Blanket.

Throwback Thursday: Uniforms

As you know I started school on Tuesday. NYC public schools start today. I'm grown now so I can wear whatever I like but there was a time when back to school meant one wardrobe option: Uniforms.

This isn't particular to #the90s, as I'm sure other people from other decades had to wear uniforms as well. But seeing ads for uniforms brings me back to my childhood, which was in #the90s lol. Luckily I don't have any photos in my old unis, but if you see a few you can imagine lol.

I had nothing remotely fly as this lol.
I didn't have enough swag like this guy.
More my steez.

I had this one too.
Yea, the good ole days.

Jeff Gordon's Greatness

"I drive fastly call me Jeff Gordon..."

These were the words of the great Nelly on "E.I." A rapper dropping a line about Nascar, groundbreaking. But that's how good Jeff Gordon was back then, so good that even black people (not the typical Nascar demographic) took note. Now I don't know much about Nascar but I know that Gordon used to win almost all the time. Just heard on Sportscenter that he had the most wins of any driver in #the90s. You know I #respect that.

Well today he won his 85th race, good for third all-time. I #respect that too. Jeff Gordon's greatness cannot be overlooked.

It also doesn't hurt that his car and his uni were fly.

Back To School

On some day in September of 1992, I started Kindergarten. Don't remember much besides crying my eyes out. For 17 straight years I went to school, culminating in my graduation from Morehouse College in 2009 (Oh Happy Day!).

I've been off of school the past few years working at the NYU Child Study Center. Today I go back to school. I have my first class as a graduate student today at 2pm. (My first class was supposed to be at 9am but I guess my professor is still on vacay lol).

Throwback Thursday: Baywatch

I went to the beach many times this summer with my campers. Of course each time I got in the water because it was hot as ______ (insert the hottest thing you can think of and add this).

What was funny was always funny was the way I ran into the water...like a Baywatch lifegaurd, the whole time singing (the parts I could remember):

Baywatch was an excellent show and we all know why:

#TheHoff, Duh! LOL
Of course The Hoff wasn't the real reason the show was poppin, it was because of the bounty of #Snookups most notably
      Pam Anderson                                +        Carmen Electra
Oh Yea
Yea
But there were plenty others:

Oh Yea Yea
Which was your favorite?

Anyway, this was an awesome show. One that I certainly wasn't supposed to be watching so I rarely did. Whenever I was able to get a glance though, I loved it.

Can I Get A Hot Tub Remix

So I know you've seen the Hot Tub State Farm commercial. My favorite commercial ever!

Saw this remix during the VMAs last night:

Awesome.

Hurricane Irene

So Hurricane Irene came and left.

Really wasn't as big a deal as they made it out to be, at least not here in New York. There was some flooding, loss of power and fallen trees out here in Staten but nothing too deadly.

I'm good (clearly), as is most of my neighborhood.

There was this though:

Uprooted tree across the street from my crib lol.

Throwback Thursday: Aaliyah

Taken too soon.
I write this post with sadness. Today marks the 10 year anniversary of the death of Aaliyah. It was tragic and depressing. She was so beautiful and was Brooklyn's finest (though raised in Detroit lol).

I remember the first time I heard "Are You That Somebody." I was at summer camp and these girls did a step routine with that beat (one of the toughest beats of all-time). I was like what is that and someone played the song to me. When I got home that joint was rocking all over the radio, it was crazy.

Aaliyah had so many cuts yo. She ruled #the90s man. It was tough to see here go when she did in the early 2000s ('01). I honestly feel like she was about to change the game for real. Unfortunately we won't know what could of been. Luckily we know what we had: Greatness. We love you and miss you baby girl.

Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial

When I first visited Washington D.C. I went as part of a history/government trip and I was certainly (still am) a history geek. We had tours of all the major memorials and monuments, I was pretty amped. My favorite monument/memorial was the FDR Memorial, he was my favorite president (this guy has over taken him). My second favorite memorial was the Lincoln and not why you may have thought. I stood on the spot that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave the "I Have a Dream Speech." (I def wrote about this before lol). It was a powerful moment for me. I realized that the engraving on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial was not enough for Dr. King...he deserved his own monument/memorial.

When I got to Morehouse this feeling intensified as I walked the campus, his campus. (Talked about this also in that previous post lol). While there I found out that a memorial was in the works. For the past month or so I've been getting emails daily counting down to the opening of the memorial and the "Official" unveiling and dedication. The unveiling and dedication isn't until this weekend, but the memorial opened today

It's beautiful.

The next time I'm in DC I'll go to it, take a picture, cry, reflect, give thanks and come away with a new favorite monument.

The Black Presidents Obama Should Thank

We all know that Barack Obama was elected as this country's first Black President but he really isn't the first Throughout the media there have been many black presidents, some of whom I think he should thank for his election as much as he thanked voters.

President David Palmer.

I've been re-watching 24 via Netflix. Its an awesome show no doubt but the main reason I started watching wasn't because of Jack Bauer's kickassness. It was because of the black man who was running for president in season one and was president in later seasons. Palmer was a very honest and caring man which made him a great president. He handled a lot of controversies well throughout the series, dealt with ridiculous amounts of assassination attempts and terrorist attacks and did it all with class and grace. I think his time as president on TV was the first time that people really believed a black man could become president. Now he's helping people get insurance too, well him and this guy lol.

Obama thank him.

President candidate turned Elect Mays Gilliam.

Yes I'm serious lol. Head of State was a "good" bad movie lol. Chris Rock, Bernie Mac as his running mateTamala Jones as the #snookup love interest and Nate Dogg rest his soul:

Need I say more lol?

Seriously though the reason why I picked Mays was that he was a black man on the campaign trail surprisingly rallying people...who does that sound like?

Obama thank him.

President Tom Beck.

This is simply off the strength of Morgan Freeman. What's Freeman's most remembered role? Without the shadow of a doubt Lean on Me. He was such a powerful leader in that movie that whenever we see him we think about that. Even though he wasn't nearly as powerful in Deep Impact he was in the ultimate position of power. All we saw was the leader from Lean on Me playing the President of the United States. That held weight.

Obama thank him.

Dave Chappelle as Black Bush

I miss Chappelle's Show so much. Chappelle had a skit in which he played the aforementioned Tim Beck but his greatest assist to Obama came as Black Bush. That portrayal, while funny, was true: Bush cared about avenging his father and getting oil. Chappelle was able to highlight those truths in a comedic way, making it easier for people to realize it and realize we don't want another republican in office. Who am I kidding? That joint was funny as hell lol:

Either way, Obama thank him.
